The inner critic isn’t always gentle or kind, but it can serve a purpose. A concept often referred to in popular psychology as the superego, the inner critic can be experienced as a judging inner monologue comprised of internalized ideas. This storytelling process may or may not be entirely conscious. Consider these steps to befriend your inner critic.

When life feels uncertain, it’s helpful to connect with the basics. Start with an accessible goal, such as five minutes per day. Practicing mindfulness doesn’t have to mean sitting in stillness for 30 minutes to get rid of uncomfortable thoughts. We can purposefully connect with ourselves, wherever we go.
